I have received several inquiries over the past months from prone shooters about matches during the winter months to keep up or develop their prone skill. In response to these inquiries the smallbore rifle director of your Association is initiating an indoor postal shooting to provide more opportunities for prone rifle enthusiasts to hone their skills. This program, which will begin in February of this year, should also appeal to junior rifle clubs or school teams which have limited transportation funds and wish to test the skills of their junior shooters under simulated match conditions at regular intervals.
Eligibility Requirements
Interested adult applicants are required to be NYSRPA members; junior applicants may be NYSRPA members or members of and affiliated NYSRPA club.
Program Content
For each applicant the program will provide a packet of five (5) target sets, each set consisting of six (6) USAS-50 targets. This target is the most accurate reduction of the 50-meter Olympic target to a 50-foot range. Unlike other 50-foot targets, the 10-dot of the USAS 50-foot target must be completely removed by the shot to achieve a 10. Consequently, the USAS-50 target will be a challenge for prone shooters of all skill levels.
Each target set will be sufficient for a 60-shot prone match.
Prone Target Packet Cost
Each target packet will cost $20 and include all mailing costs for the five target sets.
Program Operation
The program would operate as follows:
- Interested prone shooters/coaches should mail a check payable to the NYSRPA for $20 to Chuck Meyer (Smallbore Rifle Director) at 158 Willow Lane, Scotia, NY 12302. When requesting a target packet, please indicate the type of sight system that will be used to shoot the targets in the packet (iron sights or scope sight).
- The target packet and a stamped self-address envelope will be mailed to the interested party.
- The shooter fires the first target set and mails the fired target in the enclosed envelope.
- When the targets are received, they will be scored and returned to the shooter along with another self-addressed envelope.
- Steps 3 and 4 are repeated for each of the remaining target sets.
- The last target set will include a summary of the scores for each of target sets received by the Smallbore Rifle Director.
- Awards will be mailed to the highest 3 scores in the adult and junior categories upon completion of the five target sets.
